JoomLMS is compatible with multiple eLearning content standards. In this article you will find the information how to manage SCORM/AICC modules and LTI resources, and add SCORM/AICC/LTI from File Library.
SCORM/AICC
Various popular software solutions for eLearning content development allow you to publish interactive multimedia packages in SCORM or AICC format. JoomLMS is compatible with SCORM (version 1.2 and 2004) and AICC so you can import these types of packages to your courses directly.
Note: There is no separate section for uploading SCORM/AICC, you can upload these multimedia packages in the Learning Paths section of the course.
To manage the SCORM/AICC packages, go to the Learning Paths () section of the course. You will see a list with Learning Paths, LTI resources and SCORM/AICC packages of the course. The SCORM/AICC packages can be distinguished by the spinning gears (
) icon next to the name of the item.
Adding SCORM/AICC packages
You can upload a new SCORM/AICC package to the course in the following way:
- In the Learning Paths section of the course, click New > Import SCORM package. Both SCORM and AICC can be uploaded using this option. You will be redirected to the new SCORM/AICC page.
- Configure the parameters for the SCORM/AICC:
- Enter name: specify the name of the SCORM/AICC package.
- Choose a file: Select Choose a file from your computer if you wish to upload the zip archive of SCORM/AICC from a local device, then click the Choose file button to browse for the package to be uploaded. Alternatively select Choose a file uploaded into Joomla 'media' folder via FTP to add a package pre-uploaded via FTP to the 'media' folder on your server, then enter the path to the zip archive within the 'media' folder.
Note: The path to the zip folder should be relative. For example if the package is located in the root of the 'media' folder, just specify its name, e.g. 'scorm.zip'. If the SCORM/AICC is located in a subfolder within the 'media' folder, specify the subfolder as well, e.g. 'subfolder/scorm.zip'.
- Short description: specify a short description for the SCORM/AICC, if any, it will not be visible for Students.
- Published: select Yes if the SCORM/AICC should be visible to Students or No if you don't want the Students to see it yet.
- Show in Gradebook: select Yes from the drop-down menu if you want a separate column to be created in the Gradebook section of the course and a position to be added to the personal Student Gradebook page where Students will see the results after taking this SCORM/AICC. Select No if you don't want to add a separate column to Gradebook; your Students won't see the results on their personal Gradebook pages as well.
- Hide resource in the list: Select Yes from the drop-down menu to hide this SCORM/AICC from Students in the Learning Paths section of the course; your Students will still be able to access this SCORM/AICC via a Learning Path if you add it as a step. Select No if you want Students to see this item in the list of SCORM/AICC and Learning Paths; your Students will be able to access this item separately, outside of any Learning Path even if you add it as a step to a Learning Path.
- SCORM layout type: select Inline if you want the SCORM/AICC to be displayed embedded in the page of the course with the course menus and modules still visible for Students. Select SqueezeBox Window if you want the SCORM/AICC to be displayed within a separate popup window. Select New Window if you wish the SCORM/AICC to be displayed in a new browser window.
Note: If you choose to display the SCORM/AICC either in a SqueezeBox Window or a New Window of the browser, you might want to add some instructions for your Students to allow popups in the browser settings, otherwise the SCORM/AICC might not open or submitting the tracking data to the LMS might be interrupted.
- SCORM display height: you can specify the height in pixel when you select to display the SCORM/AICC either Inline or in a SqueezeBox Window, if you prefer to limit the height of the SCORM/AICC display. You can leave 0 in this field, then the SCORM/AICC will automatically be displayed with the maximum height allowed either by the settings of the package itself or your browser window parameters.
- SCORM display width: you can specify the width in pixel when you select to display the SCORM/AICC in a SqueezeBox Window, if you prefer to limit the width of the SCORM/AICC display. You can leave 0 in this field, then the SCORM/AICC will automatically be displayed with the maximum width allowed either by the settings of the package itself or your browser window parameters.
- SCORM navigation bar: some SCORM/AICC packages have multiple items in the structure, you can display the structure of the package via the Contents button. Select Hide if you don't want to display the Contents button for this SCORM/AICC in the course. Select Top if you want to display the contents above the SCORM window. Select Left if you wish to display the contents of the package on its left.
- Time released: If you wish this SCORM/AICC to become published in a certain period after the Student's enrollment you can use this feature to determine a period of time after which the SCORM/AICC will be published. Select Yes if you wish to enable this feature and the fields on the next line below will become active. Enter the necessary time period in days, hours or minutes in the respective fields.
- Click Save to save the SCORM/AICC. You will see the new SCORM/AICC in the list of Learning Paths and SCORM/AICC packages.
Configuring prerequisites
If you don't plan to add your SCORM/AICC packages as steps to a Learning Path (for more information, see Learning Paths), you can configure prerequisites for them in order to make your Students take the packages in a specific order.
Note: Prerequisites can be configured only after the SCORM/AICC is added to the system, so you will see this option only when you edit the existing SCORM/AICC in the course.
To configure prerequisites for a SCORM/AICC package, follow these steps:
- Click Edit in the drop-down menu next to the name of the SCORM/AICC package in the list or select the SCORM/AICC by checking the box next to it and click Actions > Edit.
- Under Prerequisites, in the Select learning path(s) frame, click on the existing Learning Path or another SCORM/AICC package (that should be prerequisite to the SCORM/AICC you are editing) to select it, then click the blue arrow pointing right to move the selected item to the Added learning paths frame.
Tip: To select multiple Learning Paths/SCORM/AICC, hold Shift and select the items either using keyboard controls or dragging the cursor over the items with the left button of the mouse pressed.
- Click Save to save the changes. The item that has prerequisites set will be marked in the list with the (
) icon. Students will see the items with prerequisites greyed out or will not see them at all until prerequisite items are completed, depending on the respective setting at Step 2 of the Course Builder.
LTI
Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is an eLearning technology supported by JoomLMS. LTI support allows you to add course content or tools provided by external, third-party systems to your LMS without your Students having to log in separately on the external systems, while the LMS shares Student information with the external systems.
To manage the LTI resources, go to the Learning Paths () section of the course. The LTI resources can be distinguished by the cloud (
) icon next to the name of the item.
Adding LTI resources
You can add a new LTI resource to the course in the following way:
- In the Learning Paths section of the course, click New > Add external tool (LTI-compliant resource) package. You will be redirected to the new LTI resource page.
- Configure the parameters for the LTI resource:
- Enter name: specify the name of the LTI resource.
- Short description: specify a short description for the LTI resource, if any, it will not be visible for Students.
- Launch URL/Secure Launch URL: specify either http or https URL for the LTI resource according to the LTI provider data.
- Consumer key: specify the consumer key for the LTI resource according to the LTI provider data.
- Shared secret: specify the shared secret for the LTI resource according to the LTI provider data. Use the radio button next to the field to show or hide the password for your convenience.
- Custom params: (optional) specify custom parameters for the LTI resource, if any. For more details about custom parameters substitution see Appendix C.
- Receive grade from provider: Select No: Auto-pass if you wish the LTI resource to be marked as completed automatically as soon as a Student opens it in the course. Select Yes: Accept Grade from the tool if you wish the LTI resource to be completed only if a certain grade is returned. If Yes is selected, the Grade to pass drop-down menu will become available; select a grade between 0 and 1 that should be returned in order for the LTI resource to be marked as completed. If the returned grade is lower than the selected one, the LTI resource will remain marked as incomplete.
- Show title: select Yes if you want the LTI resource title to be displayed along with the name you entered in the respective parameter. Select No if you don't want the title to be displayed.
- Published: select Yes if the LTI resource should be visible to Students or No if you don't want the Students to see it yet.
- Hide resource in the list: Select Yes from the drop-down menu to hide this LTI resource from Students in the Learning Paths section of the course; your Students will still be able to access this LTI resource via a Learning Path if you add it as a step. Select No if you want Students to see this item in the list of SCORM/AICC/LTI and Learning Paths; your Students will be able to access this item separately, outside of any Learning Path even if you add it as a step to a Learning Path.
- Show in Gradebook: select Yes from the drop-down menu if you want a separate column to be created in the Gradebook section of the course and a position to be added to the personal Student Gradebook page where Students will see the results after taking this LTI resource. Select No if you don't want to add a separate column to Gradebook; your Students won't see the results on their personal Gradebook pages as well.
- Time released: If you wish this LTI resource to become published in a certain period after the Student's enrollment you can use this feature to determine a period of time after which the LTI resource will be published. - Click Save to save the LTI resource. You will see the new LTI resource in the list of Learning Paths, SCORM/AICC packages and LTI resources.
Adding SCORM/AICC/LTI from File Library
The SCORM/AICC packages and LTI-compliant resources that need to be added to multiple courses simultaneously can be uploaded to the File Library repository, for more information, see File Library. To link a SCORM/AICC/LTI from the File Library to the course Learning Paths section, follow these steps:
- In the Learning Paths section of the course, click New > Add resource (SCORM or LTI-compliant resource) from Library. You will be redirected to the page with two tabs: SCORM and External tool (LTI-compliant resource).
- Check the box next to one or more SCORM/AICC packages at the SCORM tab or one or more LTI resources at the External tool tab that you wish to add from the File Library into the course. You can select items at only one of the tabs at a time.
Tip: If you don't see the item you wish to link to the course in the list at the respective tab, make sure the required SCORM/AICC/LTI is published in the File Library and you selected Yes for the Share to courses parameter of this item when configuring it in the File Library.
Note: There are no additional parameters that can be configured here when you link an existing SCORM/AICC/LTI from the File Library to the course. To configure the complete set of parameters for the SCORM/AICC/LTI, you need to go to the File Library.
- Click Save to save the changes. You will see the new linked SCORM/AICC/LTI in the list of SCORM/AICC/LTI and Learning Paths.
